Men – The Nifty 50’s
It’s true, men in their fifties face increasing health challenges but that’s what getting older is all about. With a little perseverance and vigilance, 50-something men can keep excellent health while staying strong and happy in the process.
It starts with the right attitude
Being well and healthy first starts with feeling good and the best way to do that is to have a strong positive outlook about oneself and the aging process. Getting old is an inevitable fact of life and being able to accept that and “roll with the punches” is vital to overcoming diversity and enjoying the little time people have.
Stress is a killer, at any age
The same that holds true for men in their 20s, 30s, and 40s also applies to men in their 50s: stress kills men dead. Learning to cope with and react healthily to stressful situations so it does not have an adverse effect on a person’s health is crucial to living long and happily.
Eat right and exercise!
Of course, no discussion on aging would be complete without advice on why diet and exercise are so important to long life and health. No matter what age, it’s always important to consume plenty of fruits and vegetables and to participate in activities that get the heart going and blood pumping. Weight lifting is also important because people begin to lose muscle mass after the age of 40.
See a doctor for better health
It may seem like common sense but it’s still worth reiterating: men who are in their fifties should see a doctor at least once a year for tests and cancer screenings because early detection of most diseases such as cancer is essential to a high survivability rate. Men in their fifties face a wide variety of potential health problems but a doctor will know exactly what to look for and how to treat it.
For the most part, taking care of one’s self at 50 is about as straightforward as for men in their 20s, 30s, and 40s but it does take a bit more work because the older people get, the more the body wears down. Still, most men in their 50s can lead fairly regular, happy, healthy lives with few to no health problems by simply taking good care of themselves and consulting their physician regularly.
